Aiming for a flashy monitor need not be a priority. Does it get the work done at an affordable price? ViewSonic VP2785-4K does and is one of the safer choices among photographers and video editors.

For someone who looks at photography as a hobby, one thing that has disappointed me on my earlier monitors is colour correction. When working on a photograph, there are so many aspects to take care of — lighting, white balance, colour grading, contrast…. Complicating the problem is when moving a photograph from the desktop to the phone to the tablet with each producing a different result. Which one is accurate? Since most of us work with products from different brands, the quality of display makes a world of a difference.

The ViewSonic screen comes calibrated from the factory for different colour spaces, which is the range of colours your monitor show. What I am getting here is 100 per cent coverage of the Adobe RGB colour space and 96 per cent DCI-P3. It’s a factory calibrated 4K IPS panel with the 14-bit LUT and 3D LUT (Look-Up Tables) generating a smooth colour palette. I have mostly used the monitor for photo correction and video editing, which is the monitor’s primary focus group. There is uniform colour right across the screen and viewing angles are quite good. After correcting a photograph on this monitor I could actually manage to print the same with the same colour tonality. Earlier, printouts were either warmer or slightly washed out.

There are enough presets that let me switch between colour spaces. Another thing to remember is the accuracy of the monitor has a lot to do with the backlight. There is an intelligent light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the screen and backlight depending on the light condition in the room. So you can get the perfect result in any kind of lighting — pitch dark or bright.

Then there are the other important things — build, stand and ports. First let’s talk about the stand, which is practical — the height is adjustable, comes with tilt and spring assist and rotation. But I am not very happy with the glossy plastic finish in some places but that doesn’t compromise the build.

All the controls are on the front and can be easily handled. The bezels are relatively thin but the chin is slightly on the thicker side, which is compensated by the number of ports available. One of my favourite features on the monitor is KVM Switch technology. Basically, you can connect two devices to the monitor but you don’t have to move the accessories/ peripherals between them. Keyboard, Video, Mouse Switch technology with USB 3.1 Type-C allows user to control peripherals being used alongside VP2785-4K from a single keyboard and mouse.

After a couple of weeks of usage, I do realise that I may not need anything more expensive than this monitor. There is some degree of lower input lag for gaming but it’s not a display I am going to use for playing AAA titles.

It’s about ensuring a good balance when it comes to graphical content. The colours look sharp and pleasing. When I pivot the panel vertically, photographs look as large as on horizontal mode. There are enough colour settings. ViewSonic VP2785-4K is all about offering a high degree of colour accuracy.
