As the US Senate considers a bill that would force TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the app or have it face a national ban, the social media network is reportedly on the verge of launching a new app, likely to be named TikTok Notes. It will be a rival of Instagram.

Some TikTok users have received a notification that says posting will be possible on “a new app for photo posts”. The notification says it will share “existing and future public TikTok photo posts” to TikTok Notes while also giving users the ability to opt out. TechCrunch has spotted a new photo.tiktok.com URL with a prompt to open a post in the TikTok Notes app. Going by the UI of the site, it looks like users will be able to write a caption alongside your photo.

The Chinese company and Meta are competing over social media space. Meanwhile, Meta rolled out a vertical-first video player for Facebook. TikTok is also experimenting with different formats like 30-minute videos and text posts like on X and Threads. TikTok established a wide base in India in 2017 and then was banned by the Indian government in June 2020.
