With the dictation feature of Windows 10, you can quickly transcribe the words you speak into text on your computer. You can then edit the text as you please.

Dictation is currently only available in US English. Use a headset with a microphone. Once this is working, you have to enable speech recognition in Windows Settings. Open Settings and navigate to Privacy. Click on Speech on the left panel and turn on “Online speech recognition”. Your computer is now ready for voice dictation. Press the Windows and H keys together to open the dictation toolbar. When it is activated, you will hear a tone letting you know that it is ready. Start speaking and have your words converted to text in the word processor of your choice.

Play clean

How do I get rid of ads that pop up whenever I take a phone call or even when I open Whats-App on my Mi A3 mobile phone?

Minakshi Mullik

There should be no advertisements popping up on your phone because it runs on Android One, which has a very clean interface. The ads are probably coming from an app you installed or there is some malware in the phone. Get rid of any little-known apps you may have downloaded. Open Settings on the phone and go to Security & Location—Install unknown apps, and set it to “Not allowed”. Download Malwarebytes from the Google Play Store and scan the phone. The advertisements should disappear.

Finally, go to https://adssettings.google.com/authenticated and log in with your Google account and turn off Ad personalisation.

iTunes disconnect

My iPhone 6 has been running flawlessly for almost five years now. However, iTunes is of late not recognising it. Reinstalling the latest iTunes for Windows has not helped.

Somadri Chatterjee

I hope you have updated your phone to iOS version 12.4.6. If not, go to Settings—General—Software Update. You will need to download the update over WiFi. Restart both the iPhone and PC and then connect the phone to the computer. Keep looking at the iPhone for a pop-up that will tell you to “Trust this computer”. Tap on Trust. If you do not see the pop-up, check the phone’s cable and the ports on your computer. Try plugging it into a different port and see if that works. If iTunes still does not recognise the phone, open Control Panel on your PC and go to Programs and Features. See if Apple Mobile Device Support is listed. If not, you have to reinstal iTunes.

Facebook lite

The Facebook Lite app on my mother’s Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt does not work on mobile data but does the job normally over WiFi. What can I do to solve this problem?

Rakhi Chakraborty

You have to check the Internet speed on your mobile data network. Open Chrome on your phone and go to https://fast.com. If you are getting a decent speed, open Facebook on the browser and see if you can browse through your news feed normally. If everything is fine, you probably have to update the Facebook Lite app. Go to Google Play Store on your phone, tap on the hamburger menu on the top left and go to “My apps & games” and accept all the updates.

Get rid of idle files

My Windows 10 computer has become very slow of late. Is there something I can do to speed it up?

Aadil Haque

Bulk Crap Uninstaller does a good job cleaning remnants of programs you do not use anymore. Download the utility from https://www.fosshub.com/Bulk-Crap-Uninstaller.html. Once it is installed, clean up leftover files from uninstalled programs by clicking the Tools tab at the top of the window.

Then click “Clean up Program Files”folders. To clean up your hard disk and free up some space, click the Tools tab again. Then click “Start Disk Cleanup” and follow the onscreen instructions.
