It’s been a week of big upgrades for the Mac, now powered by M4 chips, but Apple kept one announcement low-key: 16GB of RAM is now the minimum for the M2 and M3 MacBook Air, giving the laptops the same RAM boost as all of the company’s other new computers announced this week.
The update is crucial when it comes to using Apple Intelligence for years to come without feeling the machine slowing down. Earlier, one could get 16GB of RAM with a MacBook Air but for that moolah had to be spent. That’s no longer the case and the move brings Apple’s cheapest laptop more in line with its competitors.
Something similar was done in 2016 when Apple made 8GB the minimum for the 13-inch MacBook Air and discontinued the 4GB 11-inch version months later. AI models tend to need a lot of RAM to function efficiently.
Though 8GB appears to be fine for the iPhone, 16GB is the new benchmark for machines running the much more open macOS.
MacBook Air with M2 and M3 comes standard with 16GB of unified memory, and is available in midnight, starlight, silver, and space grey, starting at ₹99,900 and ₹89,900 for education.
