Sony Alpha 7S III: a camera serious videographers should look at

We look at these wonderful videos on food channels online and wonder how to get a million subscribers. Here’s the deal: most use cameras and not the tiny lenses on smartphones. Sony understands that videography is serious business and has unveiled the Alpha 7S III (price: Rs 334,990; available October 14 onwards), which opens up a world of possibilities. Here’s what Mukesh Srivastava, head of digital imaging business at Sony India, told us about the camera.

It may look like the Sony A9 II but there is a lot of difference in the hardware. What are some of the big features?

One of the biggest features of Sony Alpha 7SIII is that it takes the supreme performance of the ‘S series’ to new heights and is designed for smooth movie-making experience. In terms of hardware, it has a fully articulating LCD. The side-opening vari-angle monitor gives flexibility in positioning the camera and framing shots. The Movie button is within easy reach on the camera’s top panel, and a durable HDMI Type-A terminal ensures reliable connections to external monitors. The interface in Alpha 7SIII has been completely redefined with enabling of touch operation. The menu screen can be operated by touch, while the playback screen has features such as swiping and pinch-to-zoom. Other than this, Alpha 7SIII comes with two CFexpress (a standard for removable media cards) Type A compatible media slots and the new QXGA resolution for EVF allowing 0.9x more coverage.

Some smartphone brands are now talking about real-time eye autofocus. How much of an improvement can one expect on the AF front on the Alpha 7S III?

In the new Alpha 7S III auto focus (AF) performance has improved manifolds, particularly in movie recording, AF is fast and excels at tracking because of improvements to the BIONZ XR image processing engine and algorithm, which allow users to smoothly track subjects. Real-time tracking analyses subject colour, pattern, depth, and face information to track the subject. Touch Tracking intuitively and automatically tracks a subject touched on the LCD screen.

In way of audio capturing what are some of the features?

A digital audio interface is incorporated in the camera’s Multi Interface (MI) Shoe to facilitate cleaner and clearer audio recordings without loss of quality. The XLR-K3M XLR Adaptor kit additionally provides the camera with four-channel 24-bit digital audio recording capability.

The camera gives you the freedom to emphasise high-image quality and rich tonal gradations under all kinds of shooting conditions. Specifically, for wedding purpose, this camera takes the high-performance movie recording capabilities to a next level, we believe, this is the right time for all those wedding videographers and cinematographers. In fact, not only weddings, but the camera is a gift to those OTT professional cinematographers and content creators. With OTT rising exponentially, we are very optimistic that the camera is going to be a first choice of the professionals.
