YouTube will soon be two decades old and a generation has grown up watching content creators on the platform. Sadly, some of the original creators from the early days of the platform are retiring or stepping back. Here’s a quick look at a growing list of YouTubers making the difficult choice.
Tom Scott
Tom Scott is known for his informative videos but maintaining the quality of his output has never been easy. He is stepping back from YouTube, exactly a decade since the first Things You Might Not Know video was published. “I’ve been throwing stuff at the internet since 1999, and for many, many years, that stuff went almost nowhere. I remember thinking so many times during all those years … will any of this stuff I’m making ever work? Well, this did,” he said.
MatPat
Matthew Patrick, popularly known as MatPat, has announced his semi-retirement from YouTube. “On March 9, I will be hosting my last Theory episode, at which point I will be handing off the channels to someone else,” Patrick said in a video titled Goodbye Internet. With his wife Stephanie, he co-founded the Game Theorists channel dedicated to video game lore and discussion.
CaptainSparklez
Jordan Maron is primarily known for his Minecraft videos. In his “retirement” video he said it was “kind of challenging” recording it. He has had a long run of 13 years making Minecraft gameplay videos. He came to his decision after slowing down for a few months. He won’t stop making content but it’s over as far as Minecraft gameplay content goes.
MeatCanyon
Animator Hunter “MeatCanyon” Hancock has posted a video titled Retirement but it’s something that may not be permanent. “I want to make better things for myself. Want to be a better creator in general. Just wanted to say I love all the viewers I have,” he said.
Moo
Formerly known as Moo Snuckel, Brock Barrus is an American YouTuber known for his jokes. He joined YouTube with the name BnBENTERPR1SES in May of 2011 and posted a first video about two weeks later. A few days ago he announced that he was “stepping away from YouTube full-time”.
