A season of tracking device seems to be upon us. Apple, Samsung and, of course, Tile are making some noise even though nothing has been confirmed officially. To keep things simple, a tracking device can be attached to items like keys and wallets to make your searches easy. Using an app on your mobile these items can easily be found.

On January 14, Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S21 smartphones, Galaxy Buds Pro TWS and something called Galaxy SmartTag Bluetooth object tracker. Always on top of his game, leaker Evan Blass has tweeted an image of the SmartTag. The device is rumored to be a Tile-like tracker, which via Bluetooth connects to nearby devices. The information has been spotted on Taiwan’s telecom regulator’s website. The tracker is expected to come with a single, replaceable 3V button cell and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity.

Apple too is rumoured to be working on something similar, reportedly called AirTag. Unlike the Samsung product, the one from Apple may have a U1 chip, which can also be found in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12, besides the Apple Watch Series 6 and HomePod Mini. U1 takes advantage of ultra-wideband technology, which offers more accurate indoor positioning. It is expected to feature a removable and replaceable coin-style battery.

Meanwhile, Tile, which is early to the game, is reportedly working on a new tracker that relies on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, according to a report from TechCrunch. It will use augmented reality to help guide users to the lost item’s location via the Tile mobile app, according to the report. UWB’s spatial awareness capabilities will be potentially able to locate missing items buried under a sofa cushion or lying inside a dresser drawer.
