The word ‘bespoke’ brings with it individualism, it always has since its origin in the late 16th century but made to order has remained more or less exclusive to clothing, the Savile Row kind. In the last couple of decades the definition to the word has gathered a certain elasticity to the point that it got stacked with another word — ‘artisanal’.
In the constantly-changing world of electronics, ‘bespoke’ is difficult to throw around. In June 2019, Samsung launched a refrigerator in the Korean market as the first member under the Bespoke home appliance category. Success came in heaps because customers suddenly got to play around with colours to match the overall theme of the house. Success also meant that Bespoke got advanced to international markets in 2021.
At Tuesday’s Bespoke Home event Samsung managed to remain true to its bespoke philosophy while unveiling the latest gadgets in the category, most of which may not launch in every international market but going by the way the company is getting its strategy together globally, never say never.
Technology meets aesthetics
A good example of the latest Bespoke line-up is the all-new AI-powered ovens that will launch in the second half of the year in Europe. It’s the technology that matters because it is only a matter of time we may get to see it in a different form. Coming with connected features through the SmartThings app, AI Pro Cooking can recognise ingredients, optimise the settings accordingly, and monitor the food while it’s cooking to prevent it from being over or undercooked. The Dual Cook Steam feature lets users prepare both healthy steamed dishes and oven-cooked foods using different settings at the same time.
Bespoke has also been extended to the AI dryer, offering advanced AI Optimal Dry that continuously monitors the water content and intelligently optimises the cycle to dry items thoroughly. It also automatically controls the cycle time and temperature to protect clothes from overheating.
A more global offering is SmartThings Home Life, coming in June. It’s a connectivity hub combining six essential home services — Cooking, Energy, Clothing Care, Pet Care, Air Care and Home Care. The technology will allow users to customise how their appliances will interact with one another as and when needed.
“The positive response from the Bespoke Home event last year showed us our vision for a better home life through inspirational design, customisation and intelligent connectivity struck a chord with people around the world,” said JaeSeung Lee, president and head of digital appliances business at Samsung Electronics.
All the products that have been exhibited as part of Bespoke, have different design aesthetics and blend in with most interiors.
