Most bowling alleys are missing from action but a done-shot film has brought the magic to our homes. The power of drone footage gets highlighted in this one-and-a-half minute video from Jay Christensen, produced by Rally Studios. Titled Right Up Our Alley, it’s nothing less than a cinematic achievement because of the continuous take, shot at high velocity and without digital effects.

According to CNet, a Cinewhoop drone was used to fly down bowling lanes, fly close to the pins and then soar back towards the bowlers. The best shot in the film involves the camera moving in from behind the pins, giving viewers a glimpse of the hidden machinery that controls them.

Hollywood royalty is in awe of this film. “This is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. Jaw on the floor,” tweeted director Lee Unkrich, whose 2017 film Coco won an Academy Award for best animated feature.

There are some funny moments too, like bystanders in the drone’s path can be heard quoting from The Big Lebowski, which is among the greatest bowling movies of all-time. “My foot wasn’t over the line. Mark it eight, dude,” woman near the lanes says to her bowling partner.

The film is part of a project to document well-known businesses around Minnesota that are threatened by the pandemic. The film was shot at Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis.
