RealityOS, which may become the most talked about technology this year, seems to be headed our way. It’s the name Apple is reportedly using for the operating system running its rumoured VR and AR headset. And it has appeared in a trademark filing spotted by Parker Ortolani, though Bloomberg News was the first to report the branding in 2017.
The trademark was filed on December 8, 2021 for categories such as “peripherals”, “software” and “wearable computer hardware”. But the interesting aspect comes in the form of the company’s name that filed the trademark — Realityo Systems LLC. It’s a common practice to maintain secrecy so a shell company was used to register the trademark and patents for unreleased products, so that they aren’t tied directly to Apple in case of leaks. Earlier, Yosemite Research LLC was used to register macOS names like Yosemite and Big Sur. Realityo Systems LLC and Yosemite Research LLC are registered at the same address, which sort of points to Apple.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple executives recently demonstrated the new AR/VR headset to the company’s board of directors. It means that the product could be announced very soon. What better platform to announce it at than WWDC 2022 next week.
In January there were reports that the headset was planned for a late 2022 release but that could be delayed due to development challenges. The headset’s release could now happen in 2023, according to Bloomberg.
Discovered just a few days before WWDC, which kicks off on June 6, the applications are listed with deadlines of June 8 but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes that it can be a coincidence and coincides with a legal deadline that comes six months after a trademark is originally filed.
In other Apple developments, it seems that the company may bring always-on display to the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max (later this year). Gurman has predicted that Apple may introduce the feature with iOS 16, allowing the iPhone to display a limited amount of information even when it’s locked.
