There are plenty of YouTube channels where you can see video games being played but that won’t teach you anything about game development, which is a specialised area. What if we tell you that Masahiro Sakurai can be your virtual guide? The creator of games like Kirby and Super Smash Bros. has a new project — a YouTube channel.
He has gained over 200,000 YouTube subscribers (on his English channel) in less than 24 hours of his account’s launch. So far he has uploaded three videos, the first one is an “about” video, which explains his goals and how making games around the world can be more fun by sharing the knowledge he’s gained from the video game industry.
Even a legendary name like Sakurai has to be ready for potential problems that other YouTubers already know about, namely copyright issues. He has said that if someone is not happy with the footage he includes in his videos, “I’ll do what I can to set things right”. He’s also worried that uploading separate versions of each video in Japanese and English could run afoul of YouTube’s duplicate content policies.
Sakurai began his career as part of HAL Laboratory in 1990 and served as the director on 1992’s Kirby’s Dream Land. His big moment came in 1999 with the release of the first Super Smash Bros. and as the series rolled on, the roster expanded to include gaming icons from outside Nintendo, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud, and culminating with 2018’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Meanwhile, the game developer took to Twitter to share several images over a long thread showing the several consoles he has organised and ready to turn on while at home. Though he is a Nintendo man, his set-up is packed with devices from rival companies. He has three current-generation platforms — Switch, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5.
