Google is struggling with its rollout of AI Overviews in the US but competitor Perplexity, which has built an AI-native search experience from scratch, continues its march.
AI-powered summaries are becoming common but the next step involves detailed and formatted web pages for your search queries. AI search platform Perplexity is launching a new feature called Pages that can generate a customisable webpage based on user prompts. Free and paid users can find the option to create a page in the library section. Simply enter a prompt, like “Information about Grand Canyon”, for the tool to start creating a page.
There is the option to select what kind of audience the page needs to address — beginner, advanced or anyone; this will mould the tone of the page.
Perplexity said its algorithms work to create a detailed article with different sections. The AI tools can be asked to rewrite sections or delete them and you can also add sections. That’s not all… there is also the option to insert relevant media items such as images and videos.
The feature is coming at a time when Google’s AI Overviews feature is being criticised (it has mistakenly asked people should put glue on their pizza to help the cheese stick and eat rocks).
OpenAI also showed off the ability to converse with its ChatGPT chatbot using videos and images. Microsoft has some additional features coming to Copilot and Windows 11, like Recall. Apple is expected to talk about its AI features at the upcoming WWDC on June 10.
Perplexity is raising startup capital and may have a potential valuation of $3 billion, which is small in comparison to OpenAI, which has a valuation of $80 billion.
