Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s co-founder and former chief scientist, has launched a new company, Safe Superintelligence Inc (SSI), a month after formally leaving OpenAI. The startup has “one goal and one product”: creating a safe and powerful AI system.

At OpenAI, Sutskever was at the heart of all plans to improve AI safety with the rise of “superintelligent” AI systems, an area he worked on alongside Jan Leike, who co-led OpenAI’s Superalignment team. Both left the company in May after a falling out with leadership at OpenAI over how to approach AI safety. Leike has moved to rival AI company Anthropic.

“Our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures,” SSI’s announcement reads. “This way, we can scale in peace.” SSI is co-founded by Daniel Gross, a former AI lead at Apple, and Daniel Levy, who previously worked as a member of technical staff at OpenAI.

Sutskever made news last year when he led the push to oust OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Gretchen Krueger, a policy researcher at OpenAI, also mentioned safety concerns when announcing her departure.
