Putting on a wizarding-themed coat, OnePlus has turned its Watch into a great gift for Harry Potter fans. A limited edition version of the OnePlus Watch that was launched earlier in the year, there are a lot of things to enjoy on the new version if you are a Potterhead, like the branding suggests.
The starting point of the “show” is the unboxing. The OnePlus Watch comes in a box that celebrates the moment when Harry Potter enters Diagon Alley for the first time with Hagrid, who taps on a brick pattern to open up a dead-end wall in the Leaky Cauldron.
The original OnePlus Watch had a premium design, which continues to be the case with the limited edition, which integrates the theme with the interface. Starting up the watch plays the Harry Potter animation which is visible for two-three seconds, something we wish was longer because the device offers excellent battery life, so you won’t have a chance to reboot for eight-nine days. Booting done, you are given six Harry Potter-themed watch faces, one for each House and two others (you can also use regular Watch faces).
Staying on with the Potter theme, the leather strap comes embossed with the ‘H’ logo. You don’t have to think twice about the feel of the strap because it’s good for all-day usage but we wouldn’t recommend it for exercising even though the Watch is rated IP68 and 5ATM. In fact, the full premium experience of the original OnePlus Watch is here in way of materials that make the large 46mm round display appear stunning.
When the device launched, expectations were that it would be the Apple Watch equivalent for Android since the company has been making premium products for a few years now. A lot was delivered on the display front — 1.39 inch AMOLED with 454x454 resolution, enclosing it is a stainless steel watch case.
The best part of the Watch is retained in the limited edition — battery life. Though the company says it will last 14 days of typical use but we were able to get eight days without any issues and after heavy usage. This is a brilliant figure considering some premium smartwatches allow day-long usage. GPS-tracking workouts are a great way to kill the battery but we still got several days out of it. The other great feature that remains intact is the snappy raise-to-wake feature while the display goes off as soon as you put your wrist down.
Two of the features that got added via software update are always-on display and a camera shutter control. There are more than 110 different routines for you but one niggling issue remains — you can’t go back to the home screen directly when a workout is on. And the stress app could have been improved because it simply says whether the user is stressed or not, without going into a lot of details.
Returning to the theme of the limited edition, this is meant to be for Potterheads and definitely for anyone who has all things to do with J.K. Rowling’s fantasy-driven titles. Not that a million changes have been done to the original OnePlus Watch but one certainly can’t deny that it’s a fun device to have. It’s for those who speak about the Weasley Clock with nine hands, one for each member of the Weasley family. Also, a lot of Harry Potter fans are 10-14 year olds, so they can well make their introduction to smartwatches through this special edition (though do think twice before handing over another gadget to a child). This limited edition does what it promises, keep Harry Potter readers happy. Sport the limited edition and shout out, “Expecto Patronum.”
