Instagram users can now select a song to play on their profiles. Doesn’t that remind you of MySpace days? Of course, if you are reading this, you probably don’t even remember MySpace. But unlike the social media platform from early 2000s, the songs don’t appear to autoplay.

The music added to a user’s profile is highlighted in the bio area, according to screenshots shared by Instagram. A song will be featured on a profile until the user removes or replaces it. People viewing a profile with a song can play and pause the track.

To add a song, navigate to your profile on Instagram and tap “edit profile.” Scroll down and there should be a new “Music” option in the list. Tap to add and search for an artist or song.

The platform is launching the feature in collaboration with pop star Sabrina Carpenter, whose hit Espresso has become the sound of summer 2024. Her official Instagram profile will include a teaser of a never-before-heard song, Taste.

That’s not all. The platform is adding a few hidden features themed around Carpenter’s album, Short n’ Sweet. Using certain keywords like “Sabrina” or the coffee cup emoji will turn temporary Notes messages light blue.

Instagram reportedly started experimenting with music on profiles in 2022. The new feature hopes to engage users more than ever before. The app first added the ability to add music to Stories in 2018. Last year, it rolled out a way for users to add music to Notes and photo carousels. The feature comes at a time when new apps are trying to be the modern-day Myspace, such as Noplace, a text-based social app with Gen Z-focused features like customisable profiles.
