Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that he has tried out Apple Vision Pro, the spatial computer, and he believes that his company’s Quest 3 is outright “the better product, period”. In a three-and-a-half minute video posted on Instagram, he said that his mixed-reality VR headset is “better for the vast majority of things that people use mixed reality for”.
The future of Reality Labs, a division of Meta Platforms that focuses on VR, is tied to the story of how Apple’s Vision Pro unfolds. Apple is hoping that its headset will be to virtual reality what the iPhone has been to the smartphone.
The 39-year-old CEO has pointed out the tradeoffs Apple has made. He says that the Quest 3 weighs 120g less and is more comfortable to wear for a longer period of time. He also points out that there is greater motion due to a lack of a wired battery pack and the presence of a wider field of view than the Vision Pro.
Zuckerberg also touched upon the pricing, saying that the Quest 3 is “like seven times less expensive”. The presence of physical hand controllers and hand tracking for input makes Quest 3 a better proposition. The only credit he gives the Vision Pro is for being a better entertainment device but, at the same time, added that the Quest 3 has a better “immersive” content library.
It’s true that Zuckberberg’s team has a lead in the category but what he didn’t mention is that Apple has an ecosystem advantage as well as a massive developer base.
There are now over 1,000 spatial apps designed specifically for Vision Pro, along with over 1.5 million compatible apps.
