He is Sir Jony Ive — the man who is behind iconic designs like the iPhone and iMac — has returned with a surprising project and it’s for a good cause. He has created the Red Nose for this year’s Comic Relief charity event in the UK, which has always been a major draw.
His design of the Red Nose is not a simple one — it transforms from a flat “C” shape into a honeycomb paper sphere.
In a short video, comedian Diane Morgan describes it as “the most perfect nose in history”. His special touches are obvious, like plant-based materials and a small case for storage when it’s folded flat. In a press release, Comic Relief called it “the most dramatic makeover since [the Red Nose] debut in 1988.
“We’ve grown up with Comic Relief and are proud to support their remarkable work. This new and seemingly simple Red Nose has been a fabulously complex little object to design and make and has involved our entire team. We hope it brings a little moment of joy to everyone who wears one,” Ive has said.
This is one of Ive’s first products the public can buy since he left Apple in 2019 after nearly 30 years. He and famed designer Marc Newson teamed up to start LoveFrom, a new design firm that has worked with Airbnb and Ferrari.
The next Red Nose Day is on March 17.
