Samsung is expected to improve its lead in the foldable smartphone segment after hosting its next Galaxy Unpacked event, in Paris, on July 10. In a teaser, the company said: “Prepare to discover the power of Galaxy AI, now infused into the latest Galaxy Z series and the entire Galaxy ecosystem. Get ready for a world of possibilities as we enter a new phase of mobile AI.”
At the event, the South Korean company is expected to showcase its next Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip phones, both of which have fuelled interest in foldable phones. Going by rumours the new Galaxy Z Fold could come with a wider but thinner design and feature a new “Ironflex” panel that is more durable. The phone should come with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, which offers better performance and longer battery life.
Needless to say, all the Galaxy AI features that were introduced with the Galaxy S24 series in January are expected to make their way to the new phones, plus Samsung may add a slew of new features.
There have been reports about Samsung working on patents to have a dockable S Pen, like on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, but we expect that to become a reality in a future iteration of the phone. Evan Blass, a known “leaker” in the tech industry, has said there will be three colour options.
If Samsung goes for a wider phone, it will bring the aspect ratio to something similar to that on the OnePlus Open.
The next generation Flip phone may have a bigger battery and come with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. The phone will reportedly have a 50MP camera, which would make it the same resolution as the main camera sensor on the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus.
Samsung was among the first companies to release a foldable phone and since then has maintained a solid lead in the segment. The company accounted for about 66 per cent of foldable phone shipments in 2023, according to TrendForce.
The July 10 event will be streamed live on Samsung.com, Samsung Newsroom and Samsung’s YouTube channel at 3pm CEST or 6.30pm IST.
