At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled a new Passwords app that takes forward its existing iCloud Keychain features and syncs your passwords across more devices. It will be available with the next major releases of iOS, macOS and visionOS — that is, iOS 18, macOS Sequoia and visionOS 2.
With the app, all your passwords, verification codes and security alerts will sync across your devices. In case you are using autofill, your passwords will automatically show up in the app, the company said.
All of us have a number of online accounts and thus, several passwords. Having unique passwords for all them takes quite an effort. This is where password managers come in — it gives you a secure place to organise and store credentials. At the same time, the industry is moving away from traditional passwords and towards passkeys.
The biggest advantage that the new app will offer is deep integration with your Apple logins and family sharing setups than other options like 1Password or Bitwarden. Thanks to the backing of Apple, it may seem like a safer option for people scared of security breaches suffered by others like LastPass.
For a long time, Apple users had to get their saved passwords from the Safari preferences window and later from Mac System Preferences or iOS Settings. Passwords app puts everything in one place.
There is even a column in the app where you can easily navigate your password collection. For instance, you can view all your passwords or just Wi-Fi passwords (a new addition), passkeys or codes that aren’t related to a website or service.
But remember, iCloud Passwords already support shared passwords, verification codes and a note field for every password entry. This new app simply makes it easier to get started and think about using iCloud Passwords to store your sensitive information. The app is especially compelling for those tied into the Apple ecosystem. Apple didn’t mention if the app was free or if it would require a monthly subscription.
