Google Bard can now understand YouTube videos in ways that will help viewers. Bard could already analyse YouTube videos thanks to a previous update in September, however, this did not involve the ability to interpret the content and offer detailed queries.

For example, there are videos we keep revisiting. Take the case of a video that describes how to make caramel custard. The creator of the recipe usually doesn’t post the recipe in the description and asks viewers to visit a website for the text to the recipe. If you want to understand how the custard is made, you need to sit through the video. Here’s where Bard comes in. It can now interpret the steps and tell you what to do.

“We’re taking the first steps in Bard’s ability to understand YouTube videos. For example, if you’re looking for videos on how to make olive oil cake, you can now also ask how many eggs the recipe in the first video requires. We’ve heard you want deeper engagement with YouTube videos. So we’re expanding the YouTube Extension to understand some video content so you can have a richer conversation with Bard about it,” the company wrote on Bard’s updates page.

Before the update, the YouTube Extension for Bard could be used to find specific videos, like ‘funny cat videos’. Now, you have the ability to ask the chatbot specific questions about the content of videos. The update comes at a time when Google has allowed access to Bard to teens in most countries. The search giant said in a blog post that the tool can be used to “find inspiration, discover new hobbies and solve everyday problems”.
