Have you ever wanted to own and operate your own train, to travel across the world, to pass by landmarks, and meet new and exciting people? If you own a mobile then Tiny Rails will give you that experience in addition to some surprises along the way.

The story goes that you have taken up your grandfather’s company and have to operate the train as you move across vast lands. You can set the destination and the train travels between stations. You can tap to make it go faster and have to sometimes cover the obstacles on the tracks. The game has beautiful pixel art and soothing music to match. There is a sense of simplicity and calmness to the overall experience as you see your train pass through varying landscapes.

To begin with, you start off within a part of the US and travel between stations. Along the way, you pick up different passengers. You can set the fare to your liking but have to be careful about how the passengers might react to it. You will ferry different people with their different likes and dislikes. To keep them happy, you will have to provide them with entertainment and food, among other things. The money you earn from them can also be collected after you come back to the game. In that aspect, Tiny Rails can also be called an idle game.

This brings us to the most fun part of the game. Your goal is to grow your grandfather’s company and to do that you need to keep your passengers happy. You can do that by adding sections to your train. These sections each have their benefits, they can add more passengers, provide entertainment, art and comfort facilities and just make your train special.

Each of these sections has their own unique theme from taco, tesla, sushi to cyber. This affects the realism of the game a bit but it also makes your train unique. You can obtain these sections either through a lucky draw or by unlocking different regions of the map.

Another important aspect of the game and a way for you to make more money is to trade goods. You can buy items at every station that you stop at. There are items that you can get for cheap at specific stations and you can sell for a profit at other stations. You can check what items are on sale or in demand at which station. This keeps you moving to different parts of the country, trying to increase your wealth.

VERDICT: Tiny Rails keeps you busy caring for your passengers, looking for a deal selling cargo and constantly expanding your empire. Sometimes it can get difficult to keep track of all the things happening and there is a bit of discovery involved that can be a bit frustrating. However, if you have ever had any ambitions of running and operating your own train company, Tiny Rails is the game for you. I would go so far as to rate it eight out of 10.
