On January 17, Samsung is hosting an Unpacked event where its next generation of smartphones are expected to be unveiled. There’s a twist this year. The phones are coming in the midst of the ever-growing AI buzz around the world and a few days ago, the South Korean company spoke about ‘AI for All: Connectivity in the age of AI’ at CES 2024 in Las Vegas.
At a time when ‘smart’ may simply became ‘AI-powered’, Samsung will be looking to take the lead with some meaningful changes. The event in San Jose, California, is expected to present the Galaxy S24 series which usually comes with three phones. Last year, the company had Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra.
Since Samsung recently announced Gauss, its generative AI model, the message is clear. It has three parts — Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code and Samsung Gauss Image. Language is a generative language model designed to enhance work efficiency (think: help with writing emails, summarising documents and translating). Code allows developers to code easily and quickly, and through an interactive interface. Gauss Image can generate and edit images, allowing the application of style changes.
The company is also placed perfectly in the greater scheme of things. There has been a surge in demand for high bandwidth memory, a critical component in all AI chips. This means good times for memory-chip makers.
All eyes are also on a feature called AI Live Translate Call. It will allow those with the “latest Galaxy AI phone” to use Galaxy AI to translate audio and text in real time. The new features are restricted to on-device AI, so conversations and translations won’t leave the phone. “Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever,” said Wonjoon Choi, head of research and development for Mobile eXperience Business, in an official release.
What remains to be seen is the chipset the India edition of the phones will receive — Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor or Samsung’s own Exynos chips. More information is coming your way on January 17. The event in San Jose starts at 10am PT or 11.30pm IST.
