Elon Musk said that X (formerly Twitter) will once again begin to show headlines in preview cards with URLs on the platform. The owner of X removed automatic article headlines and their subheader text a few weeks ago (on iOS and the web) because he didn’t like the aesthetics of it.
X has always been a platform to access news from various media outlets but when Musk opted to remove headlines from link previews, the usefulness of sharing links on the platform disappeared. The change had a big impact on publications using X to distribute news. Unless a post comes with a headline, users won’t be convinced to click on it. As for publishing directly on X, it doesn’t make sense for publications and freelance journalists, for there’s barely any remuneration.
To get around the change, publishers began to write their own headlines on images and post the link separately or include the headline in the image of the generated preview card. And this made the “aesthetic” issue worse.
Musk has said in a post: “In an upcoming release, X will overlay title in the upper portion of the image of a URL card.” He hasn’t offered a timeline but we can only hope that it happens in the new few days.
Meanwhile, X continues to have a tumultuous time as major advertisers like Apple and Disney have paused spending after Musk’s endorsement of antisemitic remarks. A few days ago, Musk sued Media Matters over claims of defamation. It was done in response to the news organisation’s article alleging that ads from some top brands were appearing next to hateful content.
