Streaming service Disney+ has arrived in India — ahead of schedule. The US company has overhauled the Hotstar app, making available original content from Disney+ from early on Wednesday.

An earlier announcement had said the platform would come to India on March 29.

Disney+ entered markets like the US, Australia and Canada as a standalone service. However, the company is entering India piggybacking an existing platform — Hotstar — that it already owns.

“Enjoy unlimited access to 100,000 hours of TV shows and movies from India and across the world, Star India TV shows, every major sporting event like the upcoming VIVO IPL 2020 and T20 World Cup and exclusive Hotstar Specials produced by us,” the app description on Google Play store says. “For our users in India, we also bring you the world’s best stories from Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel studios (Disney+). We’ve also dubbed them in Indian languages like Hindi, Tamil and Telegu!” it adds.

The launch of the revamped streaming service is expected to prompt a price war. Disney+ will take on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, SonyLIV, Zee5 and Voot.

Disney+ Hotstar Premium is currently available at Rs 299 a month or Rs 999 a year while Disney+ Hotstar VIP is priced at Rs 365 a year.

Netflix offers four subscription plans in the country, including a mobile-only plan. Subscribers of Amazon Prime Video can either pay Rs 129 monthly or Rs 999 annually. And while SonyLIV costs Rs 499 a year, Zee5 has a Rs 999 annual plan.

The rollout of Disney+ comes at a time Hotstar has been in the news for allegedly blocking an episode of John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight show which was critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Oliver has lashed out at Hotstar for censoring his show and hit out at the platform for editing out jokes on Disney.
