HMD wants to create a summer splash with a flip phone that Barbie wouldn’t mind having. The company has been making Nokia phones for seven years and for the new device, it has partnered with Mattel. The pink-coloured phone will come with a dash of “sparkle.” It will be among the several devices HMD has in store this summer.
Don’t expect anything over the top. It will be a feature flip phone with Barbie vibes. Many people use a basic secondary phone as a burner device, so why not something in pink?!
The device “promises to embody the vintage chic of the original girl empowerment brand with a dash of pink and, of course, sparkle,” according to a statement from HMD. It will not connect to the net but such “dumb phones” are a hit among Gen Z consumers who are trying to reduce their digital activities.
Barbie mania started rolling out again after 2023’s blockbuster movie featuring the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell. The film managed to bring in over $1.4 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023.
The collaboration also shows how HMD is coming into its own. The company is styling itself as ‘Human Mobile Devices’, expanding from exclusively producing Nokia-branded products. HMD is also moving ahead with its repairability initiative, which it kicked off with the Nokia G22 at last year’s MWC.
