Remember the Google Glass? Yes, the one we thought would be the device of the AR era. The failure of the device hasn’t stopped Meta and Snap from coming up with their take on AR glasses. This month, the two social media titans are rumoured to showcase their latest AR frames, featuring the most advanced capabilities we’ve seen yet.

Meta is expected to present Orion AR glasses at the Meta Connect event. Keeping Meta’s success with the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses as well as the Quest line of VR/AR headsets, the company is expected to deliver top-of-the-line, the first “true” AR glasses. These may come with a wider field of view and deeper integration of its Meta AI assistant than we saw in the Ray-Ban collaboration.

Earlier this year, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth described the Meta Orion AR glasses as “the most advanced piece of technology on the planet in its domain”.

But Meta has to offer more than what Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, will offer in terms of Snap Spectacles during its Partner Summit in Los Angeles. There will be a continued emphasis on AR tech and the integration of new features. Snap may continue to focus on developers and partners and less on the number of units of the device it produces. Both companies, in fact, are using the opportunity to firm up their developer base.

According to The Verge, Snap is reportedly producing fewer than 10,000 units, while Meta is manufacturing even fewer of its Orion glasses.
