Apple plans to give computer sales a boost with an overhaul of its entire Mac line with a new family of the company’s own silicon, the M4, reports Bloomberg. The new chip will boost artificial intelligence capabilities.
Though Apple launched its first MacBook Pro with an M3 chip in November 2023, Bloomberg says that the company is “nearing production” on its M4 chip, which will offer a bigger response to the large number of rival “AI PCs” hitting the market. Expect the new chip lineup to have three tiers — entry-level M4 chip is codenamed Donan, then comes Brava and the highest-performing processor is called Hydra. Apple will reportedly add Donan to the entry-level MacBook Pro, its MacBook Airs, and the lower-end Mac Mini. Mid-tier Brava will probably be kept for the higher-specced MacBook Pros, Mac Minis, and the Mac Studio, while Hidra will be for the Mac Pro.
Apple is looking to have a bigger presence in the artificial intelligence space. This year’s WWDC conference — scheduled for June 10 — may lay out the roadmap for AI features coming to various Apple devices. If that’s true then Apple may release the updated Mac models in late 2024 and extend into early 2025.
We recently saw the arrival of MacBook Air M3 but there is still no M3-powered version of the Mac Studio or the Mac Pro, meaning there could be announcements around that. The Mac Studio is available with the M2 Max and M2 Ultra configurations while the M3 Max is currently available in the MacBook Pro.
