Spring may add a spring to Apple’s steps as the long-rumoured augmented and virtual reality headset is apparently almost ready. According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Tim Cook-led company is planning to reveal the device ahead of the prestigious Worldwide Developers Conference and shipping may begin this fall.

There are reports that Apple has reportedly shared the headset with a few high-profile software developers, allowing them a first look at its new “xrOS” software. The company, it seems, has been working on the headset for seven years and had aimed to market it by 2019 but delays have shifted the release goalpost. The device’s operating system is known as “Borealis” within the company but will be publicly named xrOS.

Gurman’s prediction matches those of Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said last week that the development of the headset is delayed “due to issues with mechanical component drop testing and the availability of software development tools”. He added that it “seems more likely” that Apple will announce the headset at a media event in the spring or at WWDC.

If there is a headset offering this year, it may cost as much as $3,000 and it is expected to offer both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences.

There has also been another report by The Information about what one can expect from the headset. It is expected to include iris scanning for logins and payments and a physical dial that will let you switch out of VR. It may also feature an AirPods Pro integration that can enable “an ultra-low-latency mode” when wearing the earbuds with the headset.

At the same time, the Bloomberg report mentions that most engineers are being involved in the new project. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be a slew of other launches from Apple. The list includes a new range of MacBook Pros, a probable HomePod, iMac, iPad Pros and, of course, the new series of iPhones and Apple Watch.

Apple also appears to have started hiring retail store workers in India and a few job openings have been advertised on its career page. The openings are for “various locations within India” and it includes technical specialist, business expert, senior manager, store leader and “genius”. Usually, an Apple Store has at least 100 employees while flagship locations can have up to 1,000 workers.
