One look at any David Hockney drawing and your visual senses will be inspired. When the iPad was released in 2010, his digital landscapes and drawings became more productive. At once, people knew the iPad was the device to own. The following year, a game-changer of an app launched on the App Store. It is called Procreate (from Savage Interactive) and it makes digital painting easy. Then in 2017, The New Yorker’s long-time art editor Jorge Colombo used Procreate to illustrate the cover of the iconic magazine.
It’s time for Procreate to take the next step. The company has announced its new iPad app Procreate Dreams that comes with new animation tools made for everyone.
So far you have been doodling, drawing or showing serious interest in turning pixels into sketches using Procreate. The new app can take storytellers in a new direction. Set to be released globally later this year, it joins Procreate, the best-selling paid iPad app for over six years.
The iPad is known for its amazing touchscreen capabilities. Be it animation, 3D modeling or gaming, it’s the device to have and the iPad is miles ahead and a popular choice for content creators. Procreate Dreams is designed for touch and it promises a lot for animation artists with new tools, such as Performing, which uses gestures to automatically add keyframes as the tool records the actions.
There is a Multi-touch Timeline to make it easy to navigate, organise and edit projects. For the first time, creatives can mix drawing, cel animation, keyframing, video editing, and compositing, all with fluid gestures that keep artists focused on creating. It promises to be faster than a mouse and keyboard.
Highlights of the new app include hundreds of Procreate brushes in a new and improved painting engine, on even bigger canvases, with more layers to play with, and full support for files created in Procreate’s popular digital illustration app.
The timeline’s Playhead is something to look forward to as creatives can easily move around the timeline, add actions precisely, and flick back to instantly play the movie. Draw on the timeline with Apple Pencil to quickly select content, tracks, or keyframes, then edit them all at once.
Most industry professionals spend too long waiting for RAM previews every time they make a change. With GPU acceleration built on Metal and powered by Apple silicon, creatives can now instantly play their project as they make edits.
You can add titles, credits, and animated annotations with the full power of keyframing. There will also be the ability to import custom fonts and adjust the type to get the ideal look for a project.
If you are worried about audio-video imports, the app has you covered. You can import ProRes footage up to 8K. Easily crop, cut, pan, and zoom in post-production with high-resolution video. Creatives can draw over video to create annotated or rotoscoped projects using the full library of Procreate brushes. Procreate Dreams also introduces a new audio engine. Creatives can now bring their characters to life with voiceovers, add atmospheric music, and finish projects with the perfect sound effects.
The app will be released on November 22 and will be available on the App Store for a single-time purchase of $19.99. That means, no subscriptions.
