Airbnb will no longer allow the usage of indoor security cameras in listings globally. Earlier, hosts were allowed to install indoor security cameras in common areas as long as the devices were clearly disclosed on the listing page and placed in visible spots in the home, like corridors. Security cameras were never allowed in spaces like sleeping areas and bathrooms.
“These changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community,” said Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships.
New rules are also in place for outdoor security cameras. Hosts will now have to disclose their use and locations before guests book a listing. Further, outdoor cams cannot be used to keep tabs on indoor spaces and they cannot be used in “certain outdoor areas where there’s a great expectation of privacy”, like an outdoor shower or sauna.
Another change involves the disclosure of noise decibel monitors, which hosts might use to measure whether there’s a party going on in their rental. Airbnb hosts have till the end of April to remove the security cameras from inside their listings. If an indoor camera is found after April, the company will investigate and it could remove the host’s listing or account.
