A record player from IKEA is coming in fall

Designed in collaboration with music supergroup Swedish House Mafia, the chunky design of the record player is at eye-grabbing

Known for minimalist furniture designs, IKEA is taking on a new category — record player as part of its new Obegränsad collection this fall. Designed in collaboration with music supergroup Swedish House Mafia, the chunky design of the record player is at eye-grabbing.

Though the turntable doesn’t offer much in the way of known features beyond Bluetooth speaker support, the minimalist design could be a conversation starter. “I never thought I’d work with producing a record player”, said Carmen Stoicescu, product design engineer at IKEA. She was involved in the development of one set to be part of a previous project, which fell through due to challenges with strict design requirements and cost consciousness.

“I remember Axwell (of Swedish House Mafia) said, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if you could buy a record player as a gift for a friend?’, and that became sort of a brief. To make something so simple, so accessible, and sort of plug-and-play that you could basically buy it as a gift for anyone who enjoys music”, said IKEA designer Friso Wiersma.

Going through the literature from IKEA, one can get a feel of the player’s functionality, like it has a built-in preamp, is powered over USB and features a replaceable cartridge and needle.
