Six projects for a perfect Men’s Hockey World Cup

To showcase the state capital’s modern infrastructure during the Men’s Hockey World Cup, the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited has implemented six that will help visitors

Centre of action

To smoothen the service delivery system during the world cup, the Bhubaneswar Operation Centre has been started. The centralised command control centre will monitor, operate and control services such as traffic and disaster management, and surveillance. It has a 100ft long video wall, which is being used to monitor the services

Be pedal happy

The public bicycle sharing programme has at its disposal 1,500 cycles that can be taken on rent. The officials have engaged Hexi Bikes, a product of Hero Cycles, that has provided 1,000 cycles, while Yaana and Yulu have given 500 bicycles each. The programme will benefit the visitors coming here for the hockey world cup

Signal system

Traditional traffic lighting system has been replaced with one that runs on an automatic platform at 58 junctions. Besides, 14 pelican signals have also been introduced to facilitate movement of pedestrians. Five blinkers have been installed to control the traffic

Net connect

The Wi-Fi that runs under hubaneswarMe Wi-Fi has 275 access points and covers almost all important business and popular areas in the city. A user can access 250MB of data for free on a given day. The 250MB limit will be reduced to 50MB a day after the world cup ends, sources said

Smart revamp

The smart Janpath project has also been expedited for the world cup. The Janpath has been revamped into a model street. Till date, work between Sishu Bhawan and Master Canteen Square is nearing completion. Two major installations — gateway to Old Town (Ekamrakhestra) and I Love Bhubaneswar — have been placed at Sishu Bhawan Square and Master Canteen Square, respectively

Easy pay

Common payment card Odyssey has been introduced. The smart card will help people migrate to a hassle-free cashless society. The ATM-like card could be used for making payments at shopping malls, buying bus tickets and taking bicycles on rent. World cup visitors can get the card for Rs 50. For a hassle-free experience, one can apply for the card and top it up with cash online
