To promote the Men’s Hockey World Cup to be held here next month, the state government has rolled out an advertisement campaign on buses in Germany’s Munich city. The state government had earlier launched a similar campaign in London and Sydney in Australia.

The campaign — “Odisha by morning, hockey by evening” — has been launched during the Munich Oktoberfest, which is one of the largest folk festivals in the world. Sports department officials said that the main objective of the campaign was to attract maximum foreign tourists to Odisha.

Sports secretary Vishal Dev said the campaign was launched during the Oktoberfest, which is a huge crowd-puller.

“Odisha will get valuable exposure from audiences during the peak morning and evening commutes and goes a long way in popularising the state as an exciting sports and tourist destination to the world. The bus advertising activity is part of a wider marketing campaign undertaken for the world cup,” he said.

A sports department official said that the festival attracted an average of around six million visitors a year in the last one decade. He said the campaign would continue till October 31.

The state government had earlier unveiled bus advertisement campaign in London, where the Women’s Hockey World Cup was held in July and August. Similarly, 50 city buses plying in major routes in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri will also be used for promotion of the event, which will feature Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan in the opening ceremony.
