Police on Monday sounded a high alert across the district following the killing of an MLA and a former legislator in bordering Andhra Pradesh by Maoists on Sunday.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former TDP legislator Siveri Soma were shot dead by a group of Maoists at Dumbriguda Mandal of Araku valley in the bordering state, which lies at a distance of around 10km from Koraput’s border.
The police said as the place of incident had proximity to the state’s border, the Maoists might try to sneak inside Odisha for shelter. “All police stations bordering Andhra Pradesh have been kept on maximum alert. While the border has been sealed, additional forces have been deployed at vulnerable points,” said Koraput police superintendent Kanwar Vishal Singh.
“Vehicles are being thoroughly frisked. At present, though the situation is under control, we can’t be complacent. All precautionary measures have been taken to avoid any untoward incidents,” he said.
The high alert is need of the hour as Araku valley shares boundary with Odisha’s Chatwa in Padwa police limits and Maoist central committee member Rama Krishna alias RK operates in the area.
RK leads the Andhra-Odisha Border Zonal Committee of the banned CPI (Maoist), which also operates at Narayanpatna, Bandhugaon and Pottangi of Koraput.
Armed Maoists gunned down BJD MLA Jagabandhu Majhi from the Umerkote Assembly segment and his personal security officer at a public meeting at Gona (bordering Chhattisgarh) in Nabarangpur district on September 24, 2011.
