Hockey Men’s World Cup nears, projects on fast lane

With govt agencies busy executing projects, The Telegraph takes a look at their present status

Several projects are being implemented to deck up Bhubaneswar before this month’s Hockey Men’s World Cup. With government agencies busy executing the projects, Sandeep Mishra of The Telegraph takes a look at their present status

  • Executing agency: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation
  • The project: The modular toilets will be equipped with washbasins, urinals and stainless steel closet. The toilets will have automatic and semi-automatic flushing system along with standard features such as faucet, mirrors and dustbins.
  • The count: Plan to install 60 modular toilets with equal number of automatic and semi-automatic facilities. These toilets will be equally split into exclusive facilities for men and women.
  • Status: Procurement over, but site identification for installation is yet to be done.

  • Executing agency: Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited
  • The project: Sensors were to be fitted to smart bins to send alerts to the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited control room. The plan was to integrate the bins with the Bhubaneswar Operations Centre so that a direct command mechanism could be in place to inform garbage truck drivers and clear those when full.
  • The count: Plan was to install 50 dustbins. Out of these, 30 will be semi-underground bins measuring 1.5 cubic metre and the underground ones will be 3 cubic metre in length.
  • Status: The tender process was scheduled to be over by the end of September and the installation in October. However, smart city officials are yet to finalise the bidder for the project.

Water ATMs

  • Executing agency: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation
  • The project: Installation of new-age water ATMs have been planned to provide safe drinking water option during the world cup. Potable water can be fetched from these machines using coins and cards.
  • The count: The plan was to install 50 water ATMs, in addition to the existing 40 machines, across the city, with most of these to be set up in the vicinity of Kalinga Stadium.
  • Status: The civic body is yet to finalise the bidder for executing the project and go for installation of new machines.
Bomikhal Road overbridge

Bomikhal Road overbridge

  • Executing agency: Public works department
  • The project: The overbridge will open a three-way traffic connecting people from Rasulgarh to Saheed Nagar to Bomikhal. The bridge will play a crucial role since it is coming on the busy Puri-Cuttack state highway. It will help people save time at Saheed Nagar level crossing.
  • The count: It has 20 pillars on the Bomikhal side, 16 pillars on the Rasulgarh side and another 18 pillars on Saheed Nagar side.
  • Status: Pillars and retaining walls have been constructed towards Rasulgarh and Saheed Nagar sides of the bridge. The work remains incomplete in the extended portion on the Bomikhal side.
