Bus mows down doc

A doctor was knocked down to death by a speeding private bus near the BPCL petrol pump at Chandrasekharpur when he was walking on the road around 9am on Thursday.

Bhubaneswar: A doctor was knocked down to death by a speeding private bus near the BPCL petrol pump at Chandrasekharpur when he was walking on the road around 9am on Thursday.

The deceased, identified as Basanta Rout, was working in an Angul hospital.

The incident sparked tension in the area and hundreds of people gathered around the accident site. The bus driver and helper fled the spot. A mob damaged it. Chandrasekharpur police later reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Capital Hospital for autopsy.

"We have informed the family members of the deceased. Search is on to nab the driver and the helper," said a police official.

Sources said the police had also summoned the bus owner. "We have summoned the bus owner. We will interrogate him on the whereabouts of the driver and the helper," he said.

An onlooker, Sarat Mohanty, said the bus was running almost at a speed of 60kmph and failed to stop when the man came in front of it. "It is the fault of both the bus and the man," he said.

The junction has been declared as one of the main black spots of the city where accidents are a regular affair. According to data, 20 fatal accidents had occurred at the site between 2015 and 2017, killing six persons.
