Police have decided to provide extra security to the Pakistan team in the view of threats of protest from a right-wing outfit.

The state unit of the Shiv Sena has threatened to oppose the Pakistan team, which is in town to take part in the world cup. During the Champions Trophy in 2014, a few Shiv Sena activists had made obscene gestures to Pakistani players during a match at the Kalinga Stadium.

Police commissioner Satyajit Mohanty said that though the Shiv Sena has little presence in the state, the police would still provide extra security cover for the team. “Additional police personnel will be deployed at the hotel where the Pakistan team will stay. The security arrangements may be reviewed if necessary,” said Mohanty.

The police commissioner said that the police had convened a meeting with the team managers. “The police will have prior information about the movements of teams, but in case players step out for shopping and visit other tourist places, they need to inform us in advance so that we can arrange for their security,” Mohanty said.

Sixty platoons of police personnel will be deployed in the city for security of players and the venue as well. Four units of Special Operation Group (SOG) will also be on duty.

“Drones fitted with a high definition cameras will be deployed over the venue to keep a close watch on players, officials, crowd and traffic near the venue during matches. Spectators are requested to reach the venue much before the match as they will be thoroughly frisked before entering the stadium,” said a police officer.

Similarly, at least 10 new PCR vehicles will be procured to intensify patrolling in the state capital ahead of the world cup. At present, the police have 33 PCR vehicles, of which 11 are not in good condition. For the parking of four-wheelers and two-wheelers, eight places have been designated in the city. Barring the Janata Maidan, where parking is free, people have to pay a parking fee of Rs 50 for a four-wheeler and Rs 25 for a two-wheeler.
