Paradip, April 14: The state government will ban sea fishing for two months from tomorrow to ensure safe fish breeding.
The orders will remain in force till June 14. "Any deviation on part of fishermen would be dealt with by confiscation of fishing crafts," said additional fisheries officer (marine), Bharat Bhusan Sahoo.
At least six patrolling vessels, including two speed interceptor boats, will be pressed into service to intercept illegal fishing. "Armed policemen will also accompany the patrolling squad consisting of state marine fisheries personnel. Those found resorting to unlawful fishing would be booked under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act," said Sahoo.
The prohibition in view of breeding season earlier lasted for 45 days. However, it has been extended to 60 days this time following a Union agriculture ministry order. The ban is being enforced simultaneously in Bengal, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The fishermen and trawl operators have been asked not to go fishing during this time. Prohibition on sea fishing was enforced under Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act, besides the Centre's directions.
"Those living on fishing and ancillary activities have been badly hit by the ban. Sea fishing has severely suffered this year," said the representative of a local trawler operators' union, Sumant Biswal.
