A 20-year-old youth was killed after a speeding city bus rammed into his scooter from behind near Adabari on Thursday morning.
A local resident, Kaustav Saha, said the bus belongs to the ASTC and the driver was travelling at reckless speed. “He just came and hit the youth from behind and tried to escape towards Jalukbari without stopping even for a second. The driver along with the handyman was forced to stop the bus because of the traffic and escaped,” he added.
Police officials said the youth has been identified as Fahim Nadim, a resident of Garigaon.
Another eyewitness, Bishwa Bhuyan, who works with a vehicle dealer near the accident site, said the major causes of the accidents are the city buses which are unregulated. He said almost every second accident in the city happens because of these buses.
The police are currently on the lookout for the driver and handyman of the vehicle and the ASTC administration has been approached to track them both.
The official said traffic police were doing everything they can to rein in rash drivers but their efforts are not yielding any result.
Traffic police fine the buses regularly but the situation had remained the same.
