Fear of coronavirus has taken a toll on several weddings and events in Assam, with many being rescheduled.

Sumit Saha, UNE Events, told The Telegraph, “We had three weddings lined up for March and April which have been rescheduled and two cultural events for April have been called off.”

He added that the clients had asked them to keep the wedding “party and reception” on hold as they did not want the risk of any infection during the alleged outbreak.

Himangshu Agarwal, an independent event planner from Guwahati, said, “I had catered to two weddings in the past two weeks and we have seen a very low turnout of guests at the reception. We had made a list of almost 1,500 guests for the wedding but the turnout was around 250.”

He said it was not just weddings or events that has seen a hit; even birthday parties are being cancelled. Agarwal said a client called off a birthday party and cancelled all the orders.

A leading tour operator said destination weddings are also being cancelled.

“We had planned to scale up the first birthday celebration of our daughter on Sunday. It was a holiday but we chose to keep it simple for coronavirus infections threat. The well-wishers came with bouquets and returned soon after blessing our daughter Preety,”Jyoti Gogoi Moran, a resident of Kamlabari in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam said.

“Our relatives who live in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi suggested that we keep our wedding function simple,” Sabita and Shiva, who tied the knot at their residence on Monday, said.
