Assam filmmaker Joor Baruah’s documentary film, Voice of Siang, will be screened at the ongoing 16th edition of Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) 2020.

The festival, which closes on February 3, will showcase the best of international and national documentaries, short fiction and animation films. Films from the Northeast and a retrospective of Satyajit Ray and Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) will be screened at the festival, that was inaugurated on January 28 at the Nehru Centre, Worli, Mumbai. The film festival is being organised by films division, ministry of information and broadcasting.

This year, the festival directorate has received 874 entries, including 144 from 24 countries and 730 entries in the national competition respectively, according to the MIFF release. Eminent filmmakers will judge the best film in national and international competitions.

Baruah’s Voice of Siang, a documentary on the indigenous Adi people of Arunachal Pradesh, was screened at the Open Frame Film Festival, 2019, at India International Centre, New Delhi, and the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival, 2019, in Guwahati. It has also been selected for screening at other festivals such as the Diorama International Film Festival, 2020, and New Delhi International Film Festival, 2020.

The film was commissioned to Baruah as a part of a prestigious fellowship by PSBT, Prasar Bharati and the ministry of information and broadcasting. His 20-minute short film on the same subject titled Adi, At The Confluence was screened in over 40 film festivals worldwide.
