A team of Kamrup district deputy superintendent of police Kalyan Pathak, Boko police station officer-in-charge Jogendra Barman and Samaria revenue circle officer (attached) Ashirbad Hazarika, along with Assam Police Battalion and Central Reserve Police Force, visited Hohuwapara village along the Assam-Meghalaya border here in lower Assam on Wednesday to take stock of the situation following a border row on Tuesday.
A mob from the village threatened officials and contractors of the Assam PWD department, seeking closure of construction of a 400-metre road near the Hohuwa waterfall, a picnic spot, on a disputed land both Meghalaya and Assam staking claim over it.
The project cost was estimated at Rs 40 lakh.
Padmaloachan Das, a contractor, said soon on their arrival the mob asked them to leave the village and not to initiate any such development work, reportedly sanctioned in Assam.
A local resident said the waterfall and the village can be visited only for tourism purposes.
The PWD officials and contractors immediately returned from the village and informed the incident at Boko police station. During their investigation, it was found that Meghalaya started development work in the waterfall area under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and constructed road culverts.
The investigation team also found the scheme details pillar erected on the Assam side and demolished it. Boko police station officer-in-charge Jogendra Barman said the situation is under control and patrolling will be on in the sensitive area.
