Criminals set two election offices of the United People’s Party Liberal on fire and partially damaged them in Assam’s Chirang district on Monday night.

The unidentified men torched an election campaign office of the UPPL in the Bengtol gate area and another at Kajalgaon. The first incident had occurred at Birhanggaon.

UPPL vice-president and the candidate of the party from the seat, Rwngwra Narzary, had accused the ruling Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and said since the people’s mandate is going in favour of the UPPL, out of frustration the BPF has adopted the path of violence to create panic among the masses.

B. Saoraigwra, the former chairman of the Saoraigwra faction of the disbanded National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) and the candidate of the BPF from the Chirang seat of the BTC, after filling his nomination at the deputy commissioner’s office at Chirang district headquarters Kajalgaon on Tuesday, had rejected the involvement of his party in these incidents.

“We have registered a case and our investigation is on in this regard. It is believed to have committed by miscreants and not by political rivals,” said Chirang district superintendent of police Sudhakar Singh.

The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will go to polls on April 4.
