The protest was organised by the newly formed Asom Chatra Samaj, a forum of students of different universities in the state.

On Wednesday, students from Delhi University and North East Hills University also joined the protest.

“This is just the beginning. We have seen students’ movements playing a major role in our history and also in other parts of the world. With this Act, we have a bleak future. We are facing an identity crisis. So, we just cannot let it happen. Besides our studies, we also need to carry forward this fight,” said Raktim Hazarika, a student of Gauhati University who took part in the protest.

Apart from the students, several prominent individuals, authors, intellectuals and local people also joined the protest.

The students felt that it is time to come together leaving aside their ideologies for the sake of the state.

“We, the students of all universities, have come together for a greater cause. We all are from different backgrounds but for the time being we are united and we will fight against the CAA,” said another student.

Gauhati University’s Post- Graduate Students Union (PGSU) president Anurag Kalyan Borgohain said they would continue to make the students and people aware of the new law.

“We will also meet soon to decide the next course of actions,” Borgohain said.
