Curfew will be completely lifted from here from Sunday morning while it will continue to be in place in the Sohra region of East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, more than a week after shutdowns following a clash that left a person dead.

With improving scenario, curfew hours were relaxed in places such as Khyndailad, Ïewduh on Saturday. The East Khasi Hills administration has promulgated curfew in Shillong and its adjoining areas from 10pm on Saturday till 5am on Sunday.

In another order, the administration has informed that curfew would be lifted in the whole of Shillong, including Khyndailad and Ïewduh, from 5am on Sunday.

Curfew in areas under Sohra police station will be relaxed from 7am to 8pm on Sunday. It will be extended again from 8pm on Sunday and until further orders.

In Ichamati, curfew has been relaxed with effect from 8am to 2pm on Sunday and will again be promulgated from 2pm on Sunday and until further orders.

Curfew in all areas under Shella police station, Tyllap police outpost and Bholaganj police checkpost has been relaxed with effect from 8am to 4pm on Sunday. It will be extended again from 4pm on Sunday and until further orders.

Chief minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed the overall situation on Saturday noon and said law and order was very much “under control”.

“In the past 24 hours there has not been any incident and we will review it again on the different curfew timings that have been imposed. Overall, the situation in the state is very much under control. No incident had taken place and things have been quite peaceful,” Conrad told reporters.

He added that security measures would not be scaled down while he expressed concern over the impact the curfew had on farmers and vendors.

“But we are also concerned about the way the lives of the citizens have been affected, including the livelihood of a lot of farmers who come to sell vegetables in Shillong and others whose livelihood has been affected in view of the imposition of curfew,” he said.

Conrad said instead of offering its support to the government to end the current impasse, the Opposition was indulging in satirical jibes.

“I would like to appeal to all political parties and stakeholders to work together to restore normality, peace and harmony in the state,” he said.

Conrad said the government would soon convene an all-party meeting and a consultation with stakeholders.
