The Trinamool Congress suffered a setback in Assam with its state unit chief, Ripun Bora, resigning from the party on Sunday because “people of Assam are not willing to accept a party that they perceive as being from another state”.

Bora quit the Congress to join Trinamool in April 2022 after he lost the Rajya Sabha poll as a Congress nominee despite the party having the numbers to win the seat.

In his resignation letter to Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Bora cited the reasons for his quitting.

“Our efforts and a series of agitational programmes against the BJP received a phenomenal response; however, they did not translate into success in the Lok Sabha election,” Bora said.

He said the Assam TMC had “great potential”, but was hindered by several issues, including the “perception of the TMC as a regional party of Bengal”.
