One person drowned in the Teok river in Jorhat district of Upper Assam as floods continue to wreak havoc in the state.

He has been identified as Ajit Gogoi, 45, a resident of Teok.

An official said the incident took place on Monday night while Gogoi was returning home from work. However, it is not clear how he fell into the river. The body has not been recovered yet. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel are continuing their operations.

So far over 10,000 people have been affected by floods in Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao and some parts of Jorhat districts. The Kopili, Dhansiri and Diphu are flowing above the danger level, paralysing life.

Till Tuesday, services of several trains had been suspended between Tinsukia and Guwahati. Some trains were short-terminated.

The floods have damaged several embankments and a bridge at Umrangso in Dima Hasao district was washed away along with two dumper trucks.

According to officials of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of 171 villages in 13 revenue circles of Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Hojai, Jorhat and Golaghat districts are the most affected.

At present, 42 relief camps have been set up in various locations with 22,806 inmates.

The ASDMA is yet to confirm deaths related to floods in the state.

The last wave of floods had affected over 57 lakh people in Assam and 32 districts were affected. Altogether 94 people died. The Assam government on Tuesday announced ex gratia of Rs 3,800 for every flood-affected family as well as relief materials.

Some parts of Nagaland have also been affected by floods.

The situation, however, has improved in West Karbi Anglong and Nagaon over the past 24 hours.

According to officials of the Nagaon district administration, the Kampur-Jamunamukh road that was submerged partially on Sunday has been cleared on Monday night as water levels of the Kopili and Barapani rivers receded.

More than 30 villages were affected by the flooding four days back because of a rise in water levels of the two rivers.

The situation took a turn for the worse as the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (Neepco) released excess water by opening its hydel project sluice gates.

However, a Neepco source said the overflowing Kopili river was to blame for the flooding.
