The Kamrup transport department has asked all vehicle owners to clear all tax-related documents by March 31 or else they could be fined heavily and their vehicles seized for non-clearance of documents and taxes.
The district transport officer, Kamrup (rural), Gautam Das said an initiative has been taken for the citizens as vehicles without valid documents can become a threat to the people on the road as well as the people in the vehicle itself.
He added that several vehicles were found without proper papers while several were found without proper fitness.
In the past week, at least 40 vehicles have been seized for plying without documents and violating basic traffic rules.
Das added, “We are checking the safety features, including the seat belts and helmets. Bigger vehicles are thoroughly being checked as most of the time they are either plying overloaded while other times, they moving without valid insurance.”
The district transport officer said strict action is being taken against the vehicles that load passengers beyond their capacity and apart from this, private vehicles are being advised to use seat belts for both the driver and the passengers.
He also added that the transport department has issued March 31 as a deadline to update all the documents and after the deadline, anyone found without any documents, will be heavily penalised.
