Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday demanded a CBI probe into the Tinsukia killings and said if required the perpetrators should be given death sentences.
“The Congress condemns the killing of innocent people in Tinsukia on Thursday. The perpetrators should be arrested soon and, if required, should be given death sentences,” Gogoi told reporters at Rajiv Bhawan here.
“The incident proves that the law-and-order situation has deteriorated. Thousands of people are living in uncertainty. We want a CBI inquiry into the incident,” he said.
Gogoi doubted the seriousness of the inquiry conducted by state agencies. He said the state government has so far failed to find the kidnappers of Rebati Phukan, a mediator between the Centre and Ulfa, who had disappeared from here in broad daylight.
Gogoi said the state home department, headed by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, had failed. “If the chief minister can use a chartered plane to go to Chennai to open an Assam Bhawan, why can’t he visit Tinsukia using a chartered plane?” he asked.
“Sonowal always talks of unity between the Barak and the Brahmaputra valleys. But the division between the two valleys has widened during his tenure as chief minister.”
Gogoi also welcomed the Supreme Court judgment on Thursday to accept all 15 admissible documents for the claims and objections process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
