Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act student leader Rahul Chetry has been summoned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday in connection with a case related to KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi.

Chetry told The Telegraph on Thursday that he has been summoned by the NIA under Section 160 of the CrPC (allows summoning of a person who appears to be acquainted with the facts and circumstances of a case) to appear before its office in Guwahati at 11am in connection with case No. RC-13/2019/NIA-GUW dated December 14, 2019, relating to Akhil.

Chetry, a vocal critic of CAA who has participated in anti-CAA movement, is the general secretary of the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangha and a former general secretary of the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of Dibrugarh University.

“The student faternity is with me and they have assured me of all help,” he said.

Dibrugarh University PGSU condemned and questioned the role of NIA in summoning Chetry. “We are with our ex-general secretary,” it stated in a release.

Police had arrested Akhil in December last year for his alleged role in violence during the anti-CAA protest and registered a case (1688/2019) against him at Teok police station in Jorhat district. Later he was handed over to the NIA which arrested him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for having links with Maoists.

An NIA court granted bail to Akhil on Tuesday after the NIA failed to file a chargesheet against him within the specified period of 90 days. However, he was taken into custody by Sivasagar police on Thursday in connection with another case.

The principal of Cinnamara Jatiya Bidyalaya, Dibyajyoti Sarmah of Jorhat, was summoned by the NIA for questioning in Guwahati on Monday.
